Planning and delivering focus groups

Image

Aim

To provide some top tips, tools and resources to help you plan and deliver a focus group.

Content

A focus group involves a small group of people discussing an issue, product, person or thing to help the researcher understand what the wider public thinks of it. They are commonly used to explore people’s and groups’ perceptions, feelings and experiences or to generate new ideas.

Focus groups usually involve six to eight participants, who are led through the discussion by one or two facilitators. The facilitators are responsible for steering the group conversation and ensuring all issues have been discussed.

Our training course provides practical advice and guidance to help you understand why, how and when you might organise and run a focus group to support your work.

Outcomes

By the end of the course you will understand:

  • what focus groups are, their purpose, and when to use them
  • the key elements needed to prepare focus groups
  • how to select participants and secure participation, including ways to engage hard-to-reach participants
  • how to deliver a focus group

Who the session is for

This course will be useful for anyone who needs to engage stakeholders, citizens, or customers. The course is intentionally ‘basic’ in its approach and content, and little or no previous knowledge of planning or delivering a focus group is required.
